The Game
‘The Game’ is a tale of tortured characters, locked in a battle for survival against an insane, sadistic person who knows no boundaries.
Is it evil to seek revenge, ignoring societal bounds and enjoying the suffering of others? Or do the criminally insane get a ‘free pass’ precisely because they are, in fact, ‘insane’? The law seems to support his notion. A person must be deemed ‘sane’ to stand trial.
When you are the prey, fighting for survival, these subtleties are irrelevant. It is simply a question of the strength of human endurance.
One of the main characters, Lucy, is an FBI agent. During her training, she had often been told by the Trainers; ‘Analyse the impact of your decisions before you make them for they could be your last’. Lucy had taken these wise words to heart and tried to live her life by them. Over the years, she kept wondering why major parts of her life failed. Even though she applied this philosophy to the best of her abilities. Then, her new philosophy became: ‘Accept the things you cannot change, have the courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference'. This was a variation of the serenity prayer and found in the writings of the Stoics. The adoption of this new philosophy has made her happy and successful.
